A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed with the Government of India for the construction of the building and provision of medical equipment for the Emergency and Accident Unit at Mannar District General Hospital.
The signing ceremony took place on Tuesday (9) at the Ministry of Health and Mass Media. The MoU covers both the construction of the unit and the supply of medical equipment, and was signed by Specialist Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, and Santosh Jha, the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka.
Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, and the Indian High Commissioner presided over the event, marking another step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
Under the terms of the MoU, the Government of India will allocate 600 million Sri Lankan rupees for the project, which will be implemented over three years.
India extended this support in response to a request made by the Sri Lankan Government to improve emergency and accident care facilities in Mannar.
Deputy Director General (Planning) Dr. S. Sridharan, Additional Secretary (Development) Sunil Galagama, Director (Planning) Specialist Dr. Janaki Widanapathirana, and several officials from the Office of the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka also attended the occasion.
