Major Functions

Nutrition Division is the coordinating agency across institutions within the ministry offering guidance in policy formation, planning and implementation of programs, resource development, monitoring and evaluation. 
It is geared to monitor all nutrition related activities in the country and carries out its own activities such as formation of food based guidelines. The division also focuses attention on food based approaches hospital based nutrition, adult and elderly nutrition.

Food Based Dietary Guidelines for Sri Lankans (FBDG)

FBDG are science based recommendations for healthy eating. Nutrition information was disseminated through sustainable food based approaches that encourage dietary diversification through the production and consumption of micronutrient rich foods, including appropriate local and traditional foods.

People understand and eat foods and not nutrients, dietary advice based on foods rather than nutrients, will be more likely to be followed, and there fore more likely to lead to beneficial changes in food consumption patterns, nutrient intakes and ultimately health and nutritional status of individuals and populations.

Nutrition situation is stagnation and facing a double burden with malnutrition and over nutrition. Coronary hearth diseases are commonest cause of death in Sri Lanka. Diabetics, Atherosclerotic diseases and other nutrition related non communicable diseases are rising. Awareness of correction nutrition habits and life style among public is greatly in need.

A food guide, a publication with simple dietary and lifestyle guidelines for the public is timely to address the nutrition situation in Sri Lanka.
