A programme was held on 12th March 2014 at 8.00 a.m. at Kingswood College Kandy on Alcohol, Tobacco and Narcotic free Society – 2014.

Hon. Maithreepala Sirisena, Minister of Health, opened the 2nd Largest MRI Treatment Unit of Sri Lanka at the Teaching Hospital Kandy, which was build in an expense of 700 Million Rupees. .

  Hon. Maithreepala Sirisena, Minister of Health stated that the State Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Corporation (SPMC) gained a profit of 2000 Million Rupees in 2013, not because of increasing the number of workers or machines but through the commitment of the workers towards the institute. Minister of Health, Hon. Maithreepala Sirisena opened the new raw material stores for penicillin of the SPMC and the new office complex of SPMC as a parallel event of National Health Week, which was build with an expense of 40 million Rupees, yesterday (10th March). Dr. Nihal Jayathilaka – Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva – Additional Secretary, Prof. S.D. Jayaratne – Chairman SPMC and Ms. Sujeewa Jayasundara – General Manager, SPMC also participated the event. Minister of Health, Hon. Maithreepala Sirisena stated that the machines which are used in SPMC are very old.


Eighty Six Fully Equipped Ambulances Distributed To Hospitals

  In line with the activities of the National Health Week, distribution of 86 fully equipped ambulances procured under the JICA project for improvement of basic social service in emerging regions took place at BMICH on 11th March 2014. The distribution of ambulances was carried out with the participation of Hon. Maithripala Sirisena, Minister of Health. Hon. Lalith Dissanayaka, Deputy Minister of Health, H.E. Nobohitho Hobo, Ambassador to Japan, Dr. Nihal Jayathilaka Secretary , Ministry of Health and Dr. P.G. Mahipala, Director General of Health Services and officials from the provincial health departments also participated at the event.


National Health Week 10th - 16th March

The much expected Drug Policy was handed over to His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa today (10.03.2014). Hon. Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena said that under the Policy, a Drug Quality Authority and a Drug Research Laboratory to assess the quality of imported drugs will be established.

Hon. Minister inaugurated the Health Week from 10th to 16th of March at Base Hospital Homagama today. A new ward complex, an oxygen unit and rupees 80 million worth database were declared open by the Hon. minister Maithripala Sirisena and minister of education Hon. Bandula Gunawardena. Both ministers have observed procedures at the newly constructed Paediatric ward complex of the hospital.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has named the Negombo Base Hospital as the world’s best centre for the Clinical Management of Dengue and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever.
