Immigration Health Unit is the Coordination Hub for Inbound Health Assessment in the Sri Lanka

  • You will obtain an appointment for the Health Assessment once you access the above web system

  • You will receive the health cover once you complete the Health Assessment

The Residence Visa is issued by Department of Immigration and Emigration for all who has undergone Health Assessment, for a period of one year.

Residence visa renewal will also be done with renewal of Health Protection Plan

Health Protection plan entitles you to

  1. Health check up
  2. You will be screened/tested for four diseases (Tuberculosis, Malaria, HIV/AIDS and Filariasis) at In-bound Health Assessment center (IHAC)

  3. Health cover for one year
  4. You can access for health benefits at government health institutions

    • Emergency care
    • Primary out-patient care.
    • Treatment for diseases identified in the health assessment

Health protection plan does not entitle the persons access to hospitalization for non-emergencies or treatments in private hospitals

How to apply

New Arrivals - Apply for health protection plan within seven days (07) of entry into the country

Renewals - Apply one month before the expiry of Residence Visa


“Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease commonly caused by the bacillus Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Majority of cases affects the lungs (Pulmonary TB), and lesser in other part of body (Extra pulmonary TB).” All the applicants come to IHU will undergone a chest X-ray (except pregnant ladies and children below 11 years ) and those who have X-ray changes will be tested sputum for rapid test (GeneXpert) and sputum culture for the confirmation of the diseases.


“Malaria is a life-threatening infection caused by a micro-organism and transmitted by mosquitoes, from infected humans to others.” All the applicants come to IHU are screened by Screening test - Malaria Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) and those who are screening positives will be confirmed by blood films.


“It is a viral infection transmitted from diseased humans to healthy persons through sexual contact, contact with infected body fluids and sharing of Intravenous (IV) drug injection needles and syringes.” All the applicants will be screened for HIV using rapid diagnostic test (RDT) as Antigen Antibody Combo Test and screened positive persons will be undergone another RDT. Western blot test will be done as confirmatory test for the screening positive persons.


“Filariasis, also known as elephantiasis, is a disease caused by a worm, which invades the lymphatic system of the human body, and causes long term disabilities and deformities. It is also transmitted by mosquitoes from infected persons to others.” All applicants come from the Filariasis endemic countries will be screened for filariasis by using Filariasis Strip Test (FTS). Applicants from endemic countries from Brugia malayi will be screened with Filariasis Antibody Test for (FAT). Screened positive persons will be undergone a night blood film as a confirmatory test.


  • A fee of 75USD will be charged for the Health Protection Plan

  • Cash payment in LKR (Sri Lankan Rupees) only will be accepted at the Health Assessment Center
